Laws That Don't Apply to Private Schools

§1147	Admission Public schools must admit every resident child.
§1201	Public School Board Meetings School Board meetings must be conducted in public, with notice. Actions can only be taken by majority vote with the results preserved in a proper record.
§1246	Trained School Administrators School Administrators must complete continuing education requirements.
§1272a	Breakfast and Lunch Programs K-12 public schools must serve lunch. They must also serve breakfast in those buildings with more than 20% low income populations.
§1272b	These meals must meet federal nutritional standards.
§1278	Core Curriculum Content Standards Sets a high minimum statewide education standard.
§1277	School Improvement Plans Requires all public schools to adopt and implement an improvement plan.
§1279	State-Endorsed High School Diploma Provides incentive for high MEAP performance.
§1280	School Accreditation Puts in place state assistance and penalties for schools that fail state performance standards.
§1280	MEAP Tests In order to avoid penalties for failure to become accredited, public schools must be administer the MEAP test.
§1284	Days and Hours of Instruction Requires a minimum number of instructional days which increase over the next 10 years. Private school attendance need only be "regular" (§1561)
§1284b	Labor Day Start Requires that public schools close the Friday before Labor Day.
§1296	Auxiliary Services Public schools must use their state aid to provide health services, crossing guards, speech services, social work, etc. to private schools.
§1299	Open Forum Public schools must provide meeting space for student groups.
§1300a	Sexual Harassment Policy Public schools must implement a written sexual harassment policy.
§1301	Pregnant Students Public schools must teach pregnant students.
§1312	Corporal Punishment Prohibits school employees or volunteers from hitting students.
§1313	Weapons Expulsion Requires that students who bring guns or knives to school, or commit a rape or arson, be expelled.
§1321	Busing Public schools that bus their students must let private school pupils ride their buses.
§1527	Professional Development Public schools must provide five days of teacher training per year.
§1751	Special Education Public schools must provide special education services "designed to develop the maximum potential of every handicapped person in its district."
§1756	Special Education Transportation Local school boards must provide transportation for "a handicapped person who would otherwise be unable to participate in an appropriate special education program .."
