Say NO! to Kids First! Yes! The board of MASSW has formally voted to oppose the voucher proposal put forth by the organization "Kids First! Yes!". This action was taken at the December 4th board meeting following lengthy discussion and debate. This careful consideration allowed for a positive examination of all sides of the voucher initiative. In general, a strong majority of the Board spoke against the passage of vouchers in any form. It was the consensus that any voucher proposal would negatively affect public education and the students involved. MASSW supports appropriate funding levels for public education and the use of public tax dollars for public schools only. MASSW also strongly supports individual choice to educate one's children in a private or religious school setting. However, this individual choice should not be supported through public funds. MASSW also strongly believes in maintaining the constitutional guarantee of separation of church and state. Our organization is fully supportive of "ALL Kids First!" which opposes vouchers. MASSW supports an improved public school system which is appropriately funded, monitored, and administered. Public education requires practices which strengthen as opposed to voucher practices which weaken. Vouchers would promote inequitable opportunities and programming which would place thousands of students at an educational disadvantage.
MASSW supports "All Kids First". Please strongly consider an anti voucher vote next November in support of public education and school social work positions.
