Detroit ORGANIZATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND SUPERVISORS
August 24, 1999
The members of the Organization of School Administrators and Supervisors (ASAS) adamantly oppose vouchers. We represent over 1,100 public school principals and administrators. The role of a principal in a public school setting is myriad. Our schools are open to all who come. No child is denied entry and every child is provided an opportunity to receive a good, comprehensive education.
The needs of children in the public school system are extraordinary. As principals, we are confronted with providing a quality education for diverse student populations, which include special needs students, who may possess from mild to severe learning difficulties. To our knowledge, there does not exist any charter or voucher system established to accommodate the diversity of special needs students. Public schools celebrate diversity.
As public school educators, we recognize the individual needs of all children. We seek to provide the school programs that offer equal access and opportunity for all students to grow and flourish within the parameters of their abilities. The diverting of public funds to support private and parochial schools would undermine the excellent job our principals do, by reducing the amount of public dollars they need in which to support special needs and regular education programs.
Public education is the lifeblood of our democratic society. Our founding fathers envisioned public education as the cornerstone of our democracy-a place where all would come, rich and poor, to be given an equal opportunity to learn and success. We, therefore, know and have faith in the Michigan voter that they to will see the merits, as we do, of continuing to support a strong public education system.
