PPS Statement on Pubic School Vouchers

At its October 1996 meeting in Jackson, the PPS national board unanimously approved the following statement on pubic school vouchers:

"Parents for Public Schools values public education as a community enterprise. PPS chapters organize to recruit families to public schools, to promote and focus positive attention on pubic schools and to work for improvements within the pubic schools. PPS strives to maximize parent involvement and consolidate community resources by working together to ensure a quality and equitable education for all children.

In keeping with our mission, PPS unequivocally opposes vouchers, tuition tax credits or any programs that divert pubic resources from the public schools or divide the potential constituency for those schools. Parents for Public Schools value the rights and responsibilities of parents to be decision-makers in the pubic schools and favors choice within the pubic school system. We believe the issues of such choice should be decided at the local level."
